The unilateral change in the status quo of Japan's "nationalization" of the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands in September 2012 was a blunder of historic proportions not only, and not even primarily, of Japanese diplomacy, but more so of American diplomacy, specifically that of U.S. secretary of state Hillary Clinton and her deputy for East Asia, Kurt M. Campbell, one the of claimants to being "father of the 'pivot" (the other being then NSC advisor Tom Donilon).
